After a row with Chloe, a 15 year old girl, Sophie and Rebecca aged 16, created a bogus Facebook profile of a fictional boy they called Jaydon Rothwell, using a random picture of a teenager.
They sent a `friend request’ to Chloe and exchanged messages, convincing her she was forming an online relationship with Jaydon. They even arranged to meet. Chloe had been drinking with friends in a park, it was dark and as the boy looked similar to his Facebook profile picture, they kissed and she went home happy.
Sophie and Rebecca then posted a comment on ‘his’ page from another girl leading to Chloe challenging him and asking ‘What’s this about?’.
The girls created a bogus tribute page on Facebook, ‘RIP Jaydon Rothwell’ and claimed he had taken a lethal cocktail of drink and drugs after his girlfriend accused him of being unfaithful. The page attracted 2,000 members.
Chloe tried to contact his relatives to send her condolences but she was then targeted with abusive threatening phone calls, texts and messages by other teenagers (who didn’t know it was a hoax) blaming her for the tragedy.
It also triggered a police investigation into reports of the death which is when they uncovered the fact that there was no `Jaydon Rothwell’.
